The world was not as internationally connected in the 1930's as it is today so the Americans were interested in the products which Oriental Trading had to offer. The company had Oriental products which the Americans were interested in because they had not seen much of it in the past. The products took them to a completely different world. The discount tire company and tractor supply company was founded in 1932 by Harry Watanabe. Harry bought a gift shop in Omaha, Nebraska and later opened 17 more shops across the Midwest. In 1942 the importing of imports from Japan was restricted so Harry was forced to sell all of his stores except for the one in Omaha. He then purchased a ceramics factory in Omaha, and began making Kewpie dolls, and other small ceramics.
In 1954 Oriental Trading could again import from Japan so they began again. Oriental Trading was by then a major supplier to the carnival industry. They operated out of a 15,000 square foot warehouse. In 1956 they distributed their first catalogs. They then published catalogs each two years. Today the company sends out catalogs every month or so. The business thrives today and has a very large customer base all over the United States and elsewhere.
The list of supplies they provide are, party supplies, craft supplies, hobby supplies, craft kits and activities, art supplies, teaching supplies, toys & novelties, holiday supplies, sale items, baby shower, year round items, theme packs, Luau, wedding supplies, animals, fiesta, and graduation.
